Ocean Child: Between Departure and Belonging
Perched at a bus stop near the beach in Kenting, 小灣, Ocean Child sits with his head bowed, his posture heavy with hesitation. His head, a swirling red cloud, embodies the storm of emotions he carries—a deep longing, uncertainty, and an unspoken resistance to leaving. Dressed in a blue long-sleeved shirt, his connection to the sea is undeniable, as if the ocean has woven itself into his very being. But his brown pants and black shoes hint at the world beyond the shore—the city, structure, and expectations that call him away.
He does not seem eager to board the next bus. Instead, he lingers in the in-between, caught between the pull of the waves and the demands of the outside world. The bus stop is not just a place of transit but a symbol of choice: to leave or to stay. The ocean offers freedom, an endless rhythm of comfort, but reality insists on movement, on departure. His red clouded head suggests a mind full of restless thoughts, emotions that churn like the tides—does he truly want to go? Or does he secretly hope that the waves will call him back before the city takes him away?
Ocean Child is a reflection of all who have felt torn between where they are and where they are expected to be. He is the embodiment of longing—longing for escape, but also deeply tied to the emotions of the sea, reluctant to let go of its embrace.
This is my concept turned to reality for a bus stop in Kenting, a tourist spot in Pingtung, South of Taiwan.
